Nexus One Gets Multi-touch With New Android Update

Filed under: Cell Phones , Google Google just issued the first update for the Nexus One and we’re all a bit stunned, and extremely confused. See, until now getting multi-touch on Android meant either hacking your phone or living overseas. In fact, Google’s Andy Rubin was pretty dismissive of the multi-touch usage model when confronted by our friends at Engadget . So, with Google adding “Pinch-to-zoom functionality” in the Nexus One update announcement, we’re doing a double take. No fanfare. No explanation. It’s not even the first major bullet point in the list of new features. For now, the multi-touch implementation is limited to pinch-to-zoom in Maps, the browser, and the photo gallery; but it’s not hard to imagine that future updates will pack more gestures and controls. Of course the one tool that needs proper multi-touch the most, the keyboard, remains lacking.
